The following are excerpts from Victor Garcia's proposal:

I'm a Grammy-nominated jazz and Latin jazz trumpeter, composer, and bandleader who's had the incredible opportunity to tour the world with internationally acclaimed artists. I'm proud to call Chicago my home, and I'd be honored to receive this grant.

I picked up the trumpet at 15 years old and haven't put it down since. While my heart lies in jazz, I perform with salsa bands, jazz groups, church ensembles, and pop bands to make a living. I've been privileged to have played with some of the greats in many genres, such as Aretha Franklin, Wynton Marsalis, Dr. John, Michael Feinstein, Doc Severinsen, and The Isley Brothers.

I'm also an adjunct professor at three Universities in Chicago - University of Illinois-Chicago, Roosevelt University, and Loyola University, where I teach students the history of jazz and the fundamentals of the trumpet. All of that said, there's nothing quite like putting my musical ideas down on paper and composing works that will last well beyond my time. When I perform live – which I love to do – once the gig is over, the gig is over. That's why love to compose music: it allows me the freedom and creativity that no other practice can.

I plan to use the grant funds to put towards releasing my sophomore release next year, which include recording costs, paying the musicians and printing copies for sale. It will be my first Latin jazz album as a leader (my first one was an organ jazz septet project) and I've already written the music for it! Thank you so much for your consideration!
